Customizing your car insurance policy

Updated December 1, 2024 . AmFam Team

In the market for a new car insurance policy? You’ve come to the right place. At American Family Insurance, you get much more than a basic policy — you’ll get a policy complete with all the coverages you need to feel safe on the road.

Wondering how to customize your coverage? Let us show you all the ways you can!

What are the main types of car insurance?

Car insurance can be confusing, so let’s go over the main types of car insurance American Family offers:

Collision coverage. If your car is damaged in an accident, collision coverage helps pay the cost of repairing or replacing it no matter if the accident was your fault or not. After making a claim, you’ll usually pay a deductible before your insurance kicks in.

Comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive car insurance covers damage to your vehicle caused by things other than a collision or a rollover, such as hail damage or a tree falling on your car. Like collision insurance, you’ll usually pay a deductible before your insurance steps in. Comprehensive car insurance can even offer additional coverage if your vehicle is stolen, extending to custom equipment and certain electronic devices. Talk to your agent for more details.

Liability coverage. In most states, you’re required to have liability coverage. There are two types: bodily injury liability and property damage liability. Bodily injury liability could cover injuries to your passengers — although in some states, if they’re household relatives, they won’t be protected by this particular coverage. Liability could also cover the driver and passengers of the other vehicle when you’re at-fault in a car accident. Property damage liability covers damage to someone else’s property if you’re at fault in a car accident. This usually means damage to someone else’s car, but it can also include damage to other types of property.

Medical coverage. There are two types of medical coverage: medical expense and personal injury protection. Which medical coverage you’ll be able to have on your policy depends on the state where you live. Medical expense coverage pays for medical care provided to you and your passengers in a car accident, no matter who is at fault. Personal injury protection helps reimburse you and your passengers for lost income, childcare expenses, medical expenses and other costs if you’re hurt in an accident, no matter who is at fault.

Add-on coverage for your car insurance policy

You can protect yourself from more than car damage and injuries stemming from a car accident — with these extra coverages, you can get even more peace of mind while you’re on the road:

Uninsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage provides protection when you’re in an accident with an at-fault driver who doesn’t have insurance. While insurance is required in most states, not everyone follows the rules. With this coverage, you’re protected.

Underinsured motorist coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage protects you financially if you’re in an accident with an at-fault driver who doesn’t have insurance limits high enough to cover your full expenses after a claim. It also provides coverage for the insured members of your household and passengers in your vehicle.

Emergency roadside assistance. Whether your car is stranded on the highway, a country road or just in your driveway, American Family’s emergency roadside assistance can help you pay for service and support when your car can't make it to a repair shop.

Emergency roadside assistance offers towing, battery jumps, tire servicing, gas and oil delivery, locksmith services and roadside repairs 24/7, if available. All it takes is a phone call to 1-800-MYAMFAM and our friendly roadside service team will work to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

Rental car reimbursement. Car in the shop after a covered accident? Rental car reimbursement coverage helps you pay for a rental car to keep you on schedule until your car is repaired and ready to go.

Auto lease/loan protection. A new vehicle depreciates significantly the second you drive it off the lot, which can create a gap between what the car is worth and what you owe. In the event your car is totaled in a covered event, lease/loan coverage will help pay the difference.

Accidental death and dismemberment. If the worst-case scenario happens, this coverage helps provide financial benefits, regardless of who is at fault.

Road trip accident accommodations. Eligible customers can use road trip accident accommodation coverage to help pay for emergency expenses like lodging, meals and alternate transportations when they’re involved in an accident more than 100 miles from home.

New car replacement. You’ve barely broken in your new car when you’re in an accident — and bad news, your new car has been totaled. This coverage, available only for brand new vehicles, helps replace your car. New car replacement coverage is automatically removed at the first renewal of a policy after being in force for one year.

Pet coverage. If your dog or cat is in your vehicle when you’re involved in an accident or your car is stolen, this coverage can help pay for their medical expenses.

Other types of car insurance coverage

A basic car insurance policy from American Family is enough for plenty of drivers across the United States — but what if your car is more than just the way you get the kids to school, get yourself to work and everything in between?

Business car insurance. Do you have a vehicle that you use to conduct business? Then you should have American Family business car insurance. Whether it’s a light truck, SUV, dump truck or a simple sedan, you should make sure it’s protected while you or your employees are using it for business. Learn more about the differences between a commercial auto policy vs. personal.

Rideshare car insurance. Driving for Uber or Lyft in your free time to earn some extra cash? You’ll definitely need rideshare car insurance to protect you from the unexpected while you’re on the job. Sure, companies like these have insurance policies that can protect you while you’re matched with a rider on the app and taking them to their destination, but you’d be wise to round out your insurance with a policy for yourself.

Classic car insurance. Whether it’s your weekend cruiser or a car-show staple, you work hard to keep your classic car in pristine condition. That’s why we offer specialized classic car insurance. In order to be eligible, your vehicle will have to meet some conditions and you’ll need to have another vehicle you drive daily.
